We understand that all babies develop at different rates and at various ages, but there are general gross motor milestones we look for:
  • Rolling from their back to their tummy at 5-7 months
  • Sitting independently at 7-9 months
  • 4-point reciprocal crawling at 9-12 months
  • Walking independently at 12-15 months

If your child is not sitting independently by 9 months, 4-point crawling by 12 months, or walking by 15 months, a paediatric physiotherapy assessment is recommended.

We provide a full, detailed assessment of all the babies we see which includes:

  • Neurological – muscle tone, reflexes, visual tracking, adverse neurological signs
  • Musculoskeletal – muscle lengths, strength, range of motion
  • Orthopaedic – feet conditions (talipes equinovarus, metatarsus adductus), hip conditions (hip dysplasia), leg length discrepancies, standing alignment
  • Developmental – head control, back, tummy, rolling, reaching, sitting, crawling, pulling-to-stand, cruising furniture, walking with support then independently

We take the time to answer all of your questions to ensure all your concerns are addressed.

Our physiotherapists design engaging, play-based activities to improve strength, control, core stability, balance, and coordination to help facilitate your baby’s gross motor development.  The exercises we suggest are simple to incorporate into your baby’s daily routines, structuring their play time to help build strength, confidence, motivation to move and repetitive practice to achieve their gross motor milestones.  Evidence shows that early intervention is important to get the best outcome for your child – so the earlier you start physiotherapy the better the outcome!
